About
Pilgrim Compass is a practical travel reference for Catholic pilgrimage places. The first is Medjugorje, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Why it exists
There is a great deal written about these places and almost none of it is practical. Transport pages contradict each other about whether a bus exists. Prayer schedules are years out of date. The best-organised guides belong to operators who need you to buy a package, so they cannot tell you that you do not need one.
The people who go to these places are frequently older, often travelling in groups, and usually arriving somewhere they have never been in a country whose language they do not speak. They deserve a straight answer about what the walk actually takes and whether the last bus will still be there.
How it is made
Somebody goes. Walking times are timed on foot, fares are ones we paid, schedules are confirmed on the ground, and photographs are our own. Where a number is computed rather than walked — a distance modelled from map data, a sunset from the astronomical formula — the page says so in as many words.
Every perishable fact carries who checked it, when, and when it is due again. A page that passes its review date fails our build and cannot be republished until somebody has been back to it. The whole method is written out in how we check things.
