How we make money
Somebody has to pay for the walking, the photographs and the re-checking. Here is exactly who, and what it changes.
Commission on accommodation
When a reader books a room through a link on this site, Booking.com pays us a percentage of that booking. The reader pays the same price they would pay going directly — the commission comes out of Booking's margin, not out of the room rate.
That is essentially all of our income. It is a small amount of money and it arrives months after the work.
What nobody can buy
- Placement. No guesthouse, hotel or agency pays to appear here, to appear higher, or to appear at all. We have turned this down and we will keep turning it down, because a paid list is worth nothing to the person reading it.
- A review. We do not accept free stays in exchange for coverage. Where a stay was comped or where we have any relationship with a property beyond commission, that is stated on the page itself, not buried here.
- A link. We do not sell links, sponsored posts, or mentions.
Where the links are, and where they deliberately are not
About a third of the pages on this site carry a commercial link. The rest carry none, and that is a decision rather than an oversight:
- The map — it exists to be useful on a phone with no signal.
- Mass and prayer times — monetising the page somebody opens to check when Mass starts is the cheapest possible way to lose them.
- The prayer sites themselves — Apparition Hill, Križevac, St James.
- These policy pages.
Where a link does appear, the page says so above the link rather than in a footer, because a disclosure a reader reaches after clicking is not a disclosure.
What we do not run
No display advertising. No pop-ups, interstitials, newsletter overlays or cookie walls. No affiliate widgets that follow you down the page. The site carries nothing that advertises to you or follows you, which is also why it loads on a bad connection.
The honest tension
We earn more when a reader books a room, so we have a reason to want you to book a room. The check on that is simple and it is published: our recommendations state what they are based on — whether we stayed, visited, spoke to the owner, or only measured the walk — so you can weigh the advice against the evidence behind it rather than against our tone of voice.
And where the right answer is "you do not need to book anything", we say that. It is the most useful sentence in this niche and nobody selling a package can write it.
