The church calendar, and when Medjugorje fills up

Choosing dates comes before choosing a room, and half of what decides the crowd is a calendar you can work out years ahead. Here it is, for the next three years.

How this is worked out

Easter is worked out with the Meeus/Jones/Butcher computus, the standard method for the Gregorian calendar, and every movable feast sits a fixed number of days from it — Ash Wednesday forty-six before, Ascension thirty-nine after, Pentecost forty-nine, Corpus Christi sixty. The fixed feasts need no working out at all. Nothing here is copied from a list, which is why the dates are right for any year rather than only the ones somebody remembered to add; we check them against independently published Easter dates before they go out.

What it cannot tell you

  • How many people will actually be here. Crowd level is an observation and nobody on this site has made it yet; the calendar tells you which dates are candidates, not what they look like.
  • Medjugorje's own dates. Mladifest and the anniversary of the apparitions are announced by the parish each year and cannot be derived from anything — they need a named parish source, and will get one.
  • Whether Ascension and Corpus Christi are kept on their Thursdays or transferred to the following Sunday here. That is a decision of the bishops' conference, not arithmetic.
  • Mass and prayer times on any of these days. The schedule changes for the great feasts and it is not published here until somebody has confirmed it on a named date.
  • School holidays and public holidays in the countries pilgrims travel from, which move the numbers as much as the feasts do.

Two things fill this village: the church calendar and the school holidays. The second is different in every country people come from. The first is the same everywhere and can be worked out to the day, decades ahead — so it is the part worth planning around.

Movable dates hang off Easter and move by up to a month year to year. Fixed dates do not move at all, which is why the Assumption is the most reliably crowded day of the Medjugorje summer: it lands on 15 August whatever else is happening.

The three weeks nobody warns you about

Holy Week and Easter are obvious, and so is mid-August. The one that catches people is Pentecost, which falls seven weeks after Easter and lands on a long weekend in most of the countries that send groups here. It moves between mid-May and mid-June depending on the year, so a date that was quiet last spring can be the busiest weekend of the season the next.

Ash Wednesday works the other way. The weeks after it are the emptiest of the year outside deep winter, which is worth knowing if what you want is a village you can hear yourself think in.

What is still missing from this page

Everything above is arithmetic. What it does not have is somebody standing in the square counting, and that is the half that turns a calendar into advice. Until then this page tells you which dates to look at, and says plainly that it cannot tell you what you will find on them.
