Medjugorje: the practical guide
Medjugorje is a village in the municipality of Čitluk, in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1981 it has drawn pilgrims in numbers far beyond anything its size would suggest, and almost everything written about it is devotional.
This is the other half. How you get here, what it costs, how long the walk actually takes, and when the light goes on the hill you were planning to climb this afternoon.
Start here
- Apparition Hill: the climb, timed both ways
How long up, how long down, what the ground does underfoot, and when to start so you are not descending polished limestone in the dark.
- Flight delay compensation for Medjugorje flights
Whether EU261 covers your flight into or out of Split, Dubrovnik, Mostar or Sarajevo, and what is owed — worked out from the Regulation, not sold to you.
- Križevac: the climb nobody warns you about
Forty minutes up on loose limestone, and the descent takes exactly as long. Timed both ways on a named date, and matched to the light month by month.
- The church calendar, and when Medjugorje fills up
Easter, Pentecost, Corpus Christi and the fixed feasts for the next three years, computed rather than copied — and what each one does to the village.

How long it takes to walk there
Door to door from the west door of St James, walked at an unhurried pace — not straight-line distance, and not an estimate from a map. This is the number a reader plans an evening around, and it is the one thing on this site nobody can produce without coming here.
| Place | What it is | On foot | What we noticed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanjski oltar | Prayer | 1 min | — |
| Bankomat — UniCredit / Raiffeisen | Money | 2 min | Ulica Pape Ivana Pavla II. |
| Minimarket | Shops | 2 min | Ulica Pape Ivana Pavla II. Water and basic supplies. |
| Taksi stajalište | Transport | 2 min | Immediately beside the north exit from the churchyard. |
| Ambulanta za hodočasnike | Health | 3 min | First aid, within the parish grounds. |
| Glavni parking | Parking | 3 min | Asphalt, no steps. Behind the outdoor altar. Cars and coaches; high tourist coaches can get in. |
| Ljekarna | Health | 3 min | Ulica Pape Ivana Pavla II. |
| Kip Uskrslog Krista | Prayer | 5 min | — |
| Autobusni kolodvor | Transport | 9 min | — |
| Podnožje Križevca | Prayer | 25 min | — |
| Podnožje Podbrda — Plavi križ | Prayer | 27 min | — |
| Podbrdo — Gospin kip | Prayer | 47 min | Sharp, polished limestone karst above Plavi križ; extremely slippery in rain or dust. Twenty-seven minutes on the flat to Plavi križ at the foot, then a twenty-minute climb. |
| Križevac — vrh s križem | Prayer | 65 min | Steep path over large, sharp, loose limestone blocks from the first station of the Way of the Cross. Twenty-five minutes on the flat to the foot at Put Križevca, then a forty-minute climb. The descent takes as long as the climb. |
Every row walked and timed on by Marko Jurić. Times are for an ordinary pace, not a fit one. If one of them is wrong, tell us — that is what the date is for.
When the light goes
The number that matters on either hill is not sunset, it is last usable light — civil twilight, roughly half an hour after the sun goes down. Plan a descent to sunset and you cut the evening short for nothing; plan it to full dark and you come down loose limestone in the dark.
Mid-month, 2026, in local time, for 43.1909° N, 17.6783° E. Works with no signal, and it prints — which is the point, on a hill.
| Month | Sunrise | Sunset | Last usable light |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 07:18 | 16:38 | 17:09 |
| February | 06:47 | 17:19 | 17:48 |
| March | 06:02 | 17:54 | 18:22 |
| April | 06:07 | 19:30 | 20:00 |
| May | 05:25 | 20:05 | 20:38 |
| June | 05:08 | 20:30 | 21:06 |
| July | 05:22 | 20:27 | 21:01 |
| August | 05:54 | 19:53 | 20:24 |
| September | 06:28 | 19:01 | 19:29 |
| October | 07:02 | 18:07 | 18:36 |
| November | 06:41 | 16:26 | 16:56 |
| December | 07:14 | 16:14 | 16:47 |

"Last usable light" is the end of civil twilight, when the sun is 6° below the horizon. On the hill paths the effective figure can be earlier in the ravines and later on the ridge.
What is still missing
Everything above carries the date it was checked and the name of whoever checked it. That is the whole standard here, and it cuts both ways: a walking time, a fare or a prayer schedule appears on this page only once somebody has been there, so most of the page is still empty.
Still to come, in the order it will arrive: whether the walk back from the church is lit, which can only be seen after dark; getting here from the four airports, with fares actually paid and the border timed; where to stay, measured door to door and with the one question no booking site asks — whether dinner is held for anyone at the evening programme; mass and prayer times, confirmed and re-checked on a schedule; and a drawn map of the village.
We would rather show you an empty shelf than a page assembled from other people's guesses. If something here is wrong or has changed, tell us — that is what the dates are for.
